Junior League of Atlanta, Inc., Partners with the Henry W. Grady Foundation to Assist Grady Hospital and Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital with Their Hurricane Katrina Response Efforts

The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc., announced it’s partnership with the Henry W. Grady Foundation to assist with its Hurricane Katrina Response Efforts, at it’s annual General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, September 13. Currently, there are 4 areas where members of the League and their friends (non-JLA members) can assist in these efforts. They follow:

  1. Donate Target and WalMart gift cards, diapers in all sizes and infant formula, especially NeoSure. Drop these off at Junior League Headquarters. You can mail gift cards there, too. The gift cards are used to purchase clothing for the evacuees who are processed through the Hurricane Katrina response efforts at Grady.

  2. Nursing and Medical Staff Hospitality
    • Sign up for a shift to thank the existing, visiting and re-locating nurses and medical staff at Grady Hospital for all of their extra help. The JLA has a table with snacks, drinks and smiling volunteers saying thank you. Shifts run 9:30am – 11:30am, 6:30pm – 8:30pm Monday through Friday through September 30th. Saturday times vary to a little later in the morning and earlier in the afternoon. Email Sondra Parham smpdimples@aol.com with a date and time you would like to help. Bring your friends!
    • Donate food, beverages and paper products for the hospitality table. You may drop these off at HQ any time. Contact Sondra Parham at smpdimples@aol.com to coordinate your donations.

  3. Clothes Closet for Adults at Grady Hospital and Children at Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital
    • Volunteer to help set up the closets which will provide clothing and personal care packages (toiletries, towel, 1 set of clothing) for social and Hurricane Katrina case workers who are assisting people as they get back on their feet. Dates and time for the set up are still being finalized. Contact Maria Baratta at mbaratta@kilpatrickstockton.com to let her know if you are interested in helping set this up. This is a great project for you and your friends to do together.
    • Donate boxes, bins, hanging racks and shelving for the clothes closets. Bring them to HQ. Contact Maria Baratta at mbaratta@kilpatrickstockton.com to coordinate your donations.
    • Sign up for shifts that will be available daily from 10:00am – 12noon and 2pm – 4pm to work with the social and case workers to outfit individuals and families left with nothing after the hurricane. You can do this with your friends and family (no children younger than 12, please). We will begin these after October 1st. Contact Maria Baratta at mbaratta@kilpatrickstockton.com to let her know when you want to work and what fun friends you’ll be bringing with you.

  4. Resource Matching Call Center
    • Volunteer! Contact Lauren Clayton at laurensclayton@msn.com to match donations with various medical center needs. Volunteers use up to 3 phones in the Henry W. Grady Foundation offices in suite #803 in the Hurt Building. Grady’s Hurricane Katrina Response effort includes a toll-free number where people can call in to donate items or let Grady know what resources they need. This is documented by special operators. JLA volunteers use this information to match donors with those in need, making the calls to fulfill the requests. Training and an information manual are provided for this.
    • Sign up for a shift - they are flexible during daytime hours. Again, this is something fun you can do with your friends. Shifts will be available beginning the week of September 26th. Contact Lauren Clayton at laurensclayton@msn.com with the dates and times you and your friends would like to help with this crucial response to the needs of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

As the agencies begin to reassess their positions after the initial huge influx of support, other areas of need will surface. As they do, the Board of the JLA will review these options and present them to the membership as they become available. Please keep an eye on the JLA website for more opportunities and updates.
