Kids in the Kitchen

"Kids in the Kitchen" - April 21, 2007
Girls Power Summit at CheckFree in Norcross

This is the second year of the Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen Program, which is designed to combat childhood obesity. Activities to support the program will take place this spring in Junior Leagues throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

The Junior League has developed a website that contains healthy recipes, interviews with celebrities and nutritional information designed to teach children healthy eating habits. The website is located at kidsinthekitchen.ajli.org.

For our Atlanta event, we have partnered with several organizations including Cartoon Network, Share Our Strength, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlanta. On April 21, we will put on an event at the Girls Power Summit that will be held at Check Free in Norcross from 7 am to noon. This is a leadership program designed by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlanta for over 100 middle and high school girls.

We will start the day with the Junior League providing a healthy breakfast for the girls. Thereafter, our portion of the program will consist of a local chef, who will demonstrate some healthy, yet appealing recipes. In addition, an expert dietician from Children’s’ Healthcare of Atlanta will provide nutritional information such as how to read food labels and discuss appropriate portion sizes. We also plan to have the girls break into groups and make some of the easy recipes and then enjoy the fruits of their labor.

If you have any interest in being part of this event, please contact Diane Flannery at dgflannery@jonesday.com or call at 404-581-8579.
