What does JLA look for in a placement program?

  • Agency programs that reflect our mission, vision and values. Agencies that improve our community through JLA volunteer opportunities that have a measurable impact on your agency and the population(s) you serve.
  • Our primary service area is the City of Atlanta. Metropolitan Atlanta area is our secondary service area, provided these agencies also serve City of Atlanta citizens.
  • Placements will be for the 2007 - 2008 JLA year, which runs from June 2007 to May 2008. The JLA provides placements opportunities in two ways: (1) volunteers only and (2) volunteers and funding. (The JLA does not provide agencies funding only.)

What are the requirements to become a JLA placement?

  • Your agency must be a 501(c)(3) organization and non-profit collaboration that provides JLA volunteers with meaningful, high quality volunteer opportunities, including diversity and flexibility in the times available for volunteer work.
  • Volunteers: Since we look for opportunities to make the most impact on our community and in the time our volunteers spend with our agency partners, we do not approve requests that require JLA volunteers:
    • To serve in clerical positions or functions typically filled by a paid member of your staff
    • To participatein fund-raising projects
    • To join an auxiliary, guild or support group

For new applicants and returning applicants with less than 3 years of partnership with the JLA, we require the agency to provide a minimum of 5 JLA volunteers with 50 volunteer hours each. For returning applicants with 3 or more years of partnership with the league, we require the agency to provide a minimum of 10 JLA volunteers with 50 volunteer hours each. Volunteer hours can include training.

During the placement selection process in spring 2007, JLA volunteers must sign up to work with your agency in numbers sufficient to meet the minimum volunteer number requirement described above. If the minimum volunteer number is not met, then the placement may not be able to go forward.

Agencies that offer evening, weekend, early morning and/or summer volunteer opportunities are especially attractive to our volunteers who work during regular business hours. Please note that new applicants offering only weekday volunteer opportunities will not be considered.

  • Funding: Funding requests must be directly tied to the work of JLA volunteers; however, the JLA will not pay for personal transportation costs for our volunteers (i.e., costs to travel to and from your agency or volunteer site). The JLA will not fund:
  • Staff salaries and/or general operating costs
  • Debt reduction, debt payments or other financial obligations
  • Fund-raising related studies and/or events
  • Projects of a religious nature
  • Endowments
  • Capital contributions (“bricks and mortar”), sponsorships or underwriting unless they are in conjunction with a “naming” opportunity (e.g., The Junior League of Atlanta Library Room)
